The Kaduna State High Court has denied bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, citing concerns that his status could enable him interfere with ongoing investigations.
Ruling on the application, Justice Darius Khobo held that the allegations of financial impropriety and abuse of office against the former governor are weighty and justify his continued detention.
The charges were filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which is prosecuting the case.
Counsel to the former governor, Ubong Akpan, expressed disagreement with the ruling but acknowledged the court’s reasoning, confirming that the defence team would immediately challenge the decision at the appellate court.
The defence also alleged that the case is politically motivated, describing the proceedings as part of a broader agenda to keep the former governor in custody.
The proceedings, which drew heavy security presence, saw El-Rufai arrive at the court premises under escort by operatives of the ICPC and the Department of State Services (DSS), as movement within the court vicinity was restricted. Supporters of the former governor also gathered outside the courtroom.
Justice Khobo subsequently adjourned the matter to the first week of June 2026 for the continuation of proceedings and further rulings on pending applications.
The development comes amid earlier claims by El-Rufai that there were “malicious orchestrations” aimed at frustrating his release, including an alleged plan to arrest him upon arrival at Abuja Airport from Cairo in February 2026.
Notably, the ruling contrasts with an earlier decision of the Federal High Court in Kaduna, which had granted El-Rufai bail on strict conditions pending compliance.
