…As Police Uncover Niger Republic Arms Route
The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) said a group of twelve armed robbery suspects linked to the death of ARISE TV anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, and a security guard, Barnabas Danlami, are behind multiple violent crimes across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The suspects, according to police findings, were allegedly responsible for a series of robberies in Apo, Zuba, and Gwagwalada.
Investigations further revealed that the group sourced arms and ammunition from an illegal supplier based in the Niger Republic.
During a press briefing at the FCT Police Command Headquarters, Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, described the development as a breakthrough.
He said the decision to parade the suspects publicly stemmed from the widespread public concern surrounding the September 29, 2025 incident, which occurred at Unique Apartments, Gishiri Village, Katampe District, Abuja.
Quoting Hundeyin, “Why we paraded these suspects despite our policy against it, is because this is a public interest incident and we want Nigerians to see that the NPF delivered on its promise to get these suspects arrested.
“This is not just an arrest, we won’t stop here, these suspects will most definitely be prosecuted. Justice must be served, to Miss Somtochukwu and Mr Barnabas.”
The police spokesperson emphasised that the suspects were linked to broader security challenges within the capital city, including recurring robberies in other parts of the FCT.
“These suspects are linked to the insecurity happening in places like Apo, Zuba and some other parts of the FCT, Gwagwalada inclusive.
“We are also extending our investigations into that, and as soon as we wrap up our investigations, the law will take its course,” he added.
Hundeyin explained that the police had already identified the arms suppliers and were intensifying efforts to dismantle the supply chain.
“We already have the location of these suppliers, and once that operation is done, we will provide the necessary information in that regard.
“Crime is dynamic, you arrest suspects today, and a new set emerges again, it is a global thing and not a Nigerian thing,” he said.
He noted that the police had implemented measures to counter emerging criminal tactics, stressing that the Force remained committed to ensuring the safety of citizens.
Hundeyin appealed for public confidence in law enforcement agencies, assuring that the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, had directed all commands nationwide to intensify efforts toward maintaining security.
He added that the NPF would continue to uphold its duty to protect Nigerians and ensure justice for victims of violent crimes.
