“Second Bird Strike In 24 Hours” — United Nigeria Airlines Airbus A320 Temporarily Withdrawn, Flights Disrupted

United Nigeria Airlines has recorded a second bird strike within a 24-hour period, affecting operations and prompting temporary withdrawal of aircraft from service for safety inspections.

The first incident occurred yesterday when Flight UN0523, an Airbus A320 scheduled to depart from Asaba International Airport to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos at 17:00, was involved in a bird strike during take-off.

The second strike happened today, Sunday, February 15, 2026, during the take-off of Flight UN0519 from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to Lagos, also aboard an Airbus A320. The strike affected one of the aircraft’s engines.

United Nigeria Airlines’ public relations office confirmed that the airline has temporarily withdrawn both affected aircraft from service to undergo thorough technical inspections. This precaution ensures compliance with the airline’s strict safety standards.

The airline warned that some flights across its network may be delayed or disrupted as a result of the incidents.

In a statement, the airline said: “In line with our strict and uncompromising safety standards, the affected aircraft has been withdrawn from service for comprehensive technical inspections before returning to operations. This brings the total number of Airbus aircraft withdrawn from service in less than 24 hours to two. As a result, some flights across our network will be disrupted and may not operate as earlier scheduled. United Nigeria Airlines remains firmly committed to upholding the highest safety standards.

“This is indeed another bird strike too many; however, we sincerely apologize for any inconveniences this unforeseen development may cause to your travel plans and kindly seek the understanding and patience of our valued passengers and the general public. Our team is working diligently to minimize disruptions and to provide support to all affected travellers.”

The airline reassured passengers that safety remains its top priority and urged travelers to check for updates regarding affected flights.
