‘Stop This Nonsense!’ – Aisha Yesufu Criticises Appointment of FCT Minister Ahead of Council Election

Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has faulted the structure of leadership in the Federal Capital Territory, saying Abuja should be run by an elected mayor rather than an appointed minister.

She made the statement on Friday through a post on her verified X account, just hours before residents of the FCT headed to the polls to choose leaders for the six Area Councils.

Yesufu argued that the current system does not reflect true democratic governance for the nation’s capital.

According to her, Abuja deserves a leadership model that allows citizens to directly elect the person in charge of its administration.

She wrote, “Abuja needs a mayor! This nonsense appointment of a minister as the executive head of FCT needs to stop.”

Her comment quickly gained attention online and triggered debate among social media users over how the FCT should be governed.

An X user, identified as @jayeobajaye, supported her position and questioned Nigeria’s selective adoption of foreign political systems.

He said, “If we are even copying the American system of government, then we should copy it as a whole and not the partial way that is leading us nowhere.”

The FCT Area Council election involves voters across Abuja choosing chairmen and councillors for Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, and Kwali councils.
