The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, has assured Nigerians that the company is poised to surpass its current 8,700 megawatts (MW) wheeling capacity by 2026.
Abdulaziz, who gave the assurance in his 2025 End-of-Year Goodwill Message released in Abuja, noted that 2026 would usher in a beehive of activities as TCN intensifies efforts to expand grid capacity, improve stability and enhance operational efficiency.
“As we look to the New Year, we cannot afford to rest on our oars. We will intensify efforts to further increase grid capacity, stability and efficiency, as we continue the journey towards becoming one of the leading electricity transmission companies in the world,” he said.
According to him, TCN’s wheeling capacity has grown to 8,700MW, positioning the company to better support Nigeria’s rising electricity demand.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the TCN workforce to build on recent gains and seize emerging opportunities in the power sector.
Speaking on the theme of the message, “Reflecting on a Year of Progress: Delivering on Our Mandate and Powering Our Future Together,” Abdulaziz described 2025 as a historic year for the company, marked by major reforms and infrastructure milestones.
He said the year would be remembered for the unbundling of TCN and the successful take-off of the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a reform that allows TCN to focus squarely on transmission infrastructure development, expansion and maintenance, while NISO oversees system and market operations, including compliance and enforcement.
“This transition reflects maturity in our sector and a bold step toward building the kind of electricity supply industry Nigeria deserves,” he stated.
Abdulaziz said TCN recorded notable achievements on March 4, 2025, the company transmitted an all-time peak generation of 5,801.84MW, with a maximum daily energy delivery of 128,370.75 megawatt-hours, the highest in Nigeria’s history.
He said between January 2024 and November 2025, TCN commissioned 82 new power transformers, adding more than 8,500 megavolt-amperes (MVA) to the national grid, significantly boosting reliability and capacity.
The MD further disclosed that TCN advanced several critical projects during the year, funded by development partners and valued at over $1.16bn.
‘These include the Abuja Feeding Scheme, comprising five new substations and a new 330kV transmission line, with some projects already completed and others at advanced stages.
“These projects are aimed at modernising the grid, expanding capacity and preparing TCN to meet the energy needs of a growing economy,” Abdulaziz said.
Ahead of 2026, he said TCN would focus on accelerating project execution, modernising transmission infrastructure, strengthening maintenance practices and deepening stakeholder engagement, particularly with NISO and other sector players.
“As we deepen collaboration across the sector, we must remain focused on the larger goal of advancing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry and powering our nation’s growth,” he added.
