The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has declared that the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies are simply wasting their time because President Bola Tinubu will eventually leave office.
Sowore made the statement under tight security on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where he was brought from the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The activist compared his present experience with what happened in history. According to Sowore, former military dictator Sani Abacha did similar things during his regime before his eventual exit from power following his death.
The court sitting was marked by heavy security presence. Numerous court users, lawyers, and journalists complained after being denied access to the courtroom due to the strict lockdown around the premises by security operatives.
Sowore is currently being remanded in prison following an order by Justice Mohammed Garba Umar on Monday, who ruled that the activist remain in custody pending the hearing and determination of his motion to stay the revocation of his bail and bench warrant.
The legal battle stems from criminal charges filed by the DSS against Sowore over an online publication. The secret police are prosecuting the activist for allegedly making false claims against the person of President Bola Tinubu. The prosecution pointed to a specific post across Sowore’s personal “X” and Facebook accounts where he referred to the President as “a criminal,” an act the agency describes as cyberbullying and a violation of the cybercrimes law.
