President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm the appointment of Joseph Tegbe as minister of power, following the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu.
The request was conveyed in a letter read during plenary on Tuesday by Godswill Akpabio, senate president in line with constitutional provisions.
“In compliance with Section 147(2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to forward for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Mr Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister,” the President stated.
Tinubu urged the upper chamber to give the nomination swift consideration, expressing confidence in the process.
Following the reading, Akpabio referred the request to the Committee of the Whole for immediate review.
Tegbe’s nomination comes after Adelabu stepped down from the role in March 2026 to pursue the Oyo State governorship ahead of the 2027 elections, in line with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to resign.
In an earlier statement, Bayo Onanuga, presidential aide said the move is aimed at strengthening ongoing reforms in the power sector, improving electricity supply stability and attracting long-term investment under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, is a seasoned fiscal and economic expert with over three decades of experience.
He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa and currently holds the position of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.
He has also played key roles in policy and regulatory reforms, including engagements with the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.
His confirmation, if approved, is expected to shape the next phase of reforms in Nigeria’s power sector
