A dispatch rider was killed on Thursday morning in a tragic collision with a moving train at the PWD Railway Level Crossing in Ikeja, Lagos State.
It was gathered that the motorcycle was hit by a train after the rider attempted to hastily cross the railway line.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said preliminary investigations revealed that the rider, who was reportedly speeding, ignored warning signals and tried to maneuver across the track to access the GRA axis of Ikeja.
The oncoming train struck the motorcycle, killing the rider instantly.
“Preliminary investigations conducted by security personnel at the scene revealed that the dispatch rider, reportedly travelling at excessive speed, attempted to hastily manoeuvre across the railway track in a bid to access the GRA axis of Ikeja.
“In the process, he collided with an oncoming train. The impact proved fatal, as the rider died instantly, while the train continued its movement along the track,” said LASTMA’s spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
LASTMA officials, who were first to arrive at the scene, immediately cordoned off the area to prevent further accidents and ensure a smooth flow of traffic.
They were joined by officers from the Shogunle Police Division to maintain order.
The State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) later evacuated the deceased’s remains from the scene.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sympathy to the victim’s family and described the accident as a tragic reminder of the dangers of impatience and disregard for traffic safety rules.
He urged dispatch riders and motorists to always exercise caution, patience, and discipline while on the road.
He also reiterated LASTMA’s commitment to continuous public sensitisation, enforcement, and safety advocacy to ensure sanity and orderliness across Lagos roads.
NewsNGR reports that in October 2024, a 50-year-old man, identified as Emmanuel, was tragically killed by a moving train, near the Arena Shopping Mall in the Oshodi area of Lagos.
The tragic incident happened less than two months after an unidentified man was killed by an oncoming train along the railway track at Cappa in the same Oshodi area in August of the same year.
Investigation revealed that the man died immediately after the accident due to the impact of the collision.
