Two Injured As Trucks Collide In Lagos

Two persons sustained serious injuries on Tuesday when two trucks collided with a broken-down oil tanker at Berger Bridge, inward Epe, along the Epe/Ibeju-Lekki Road in Lagos.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said the incident occurred after an oil tanker, with registration number MKA-232ZE, laden with Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), broke down due to engine malfunction, causing partial obstruction of traffic on the busy route.

While repairs were being carried out on the tanker, a heavy-duty tipper loaded with granite stones reportedly lost control and rammed into the stationary tanker and another articulated truck conveying tyres.

Preliminary investigation by emergency responders revealed that over-speeding by the tipper driver caused the collision.

Fortunately, no lives were lost. However, the tipper driver and his assistant sustained severe injuries and were given first aid treatment by officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to Epe General Hospital for further medical attention.

LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that recovery operations were ongoing.

“Investigations revealed that the immediate cause of the collision was due to high speed by the tipper truck driver, which caused him to ram into the broken-down tanker and the other articulated truck.

“Fortunately, no loss of lives were recorded. However, the tipper truck driver and his Truck Assistant sustained severe injuries, and were attended to by LASAMBUS before subsequently being ferried to Epe General Hospital for further treatment,” he said in a statement.

Personnel from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria Police Force (NPF), and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) also joined the LASEMA Response Team at the scene.
