The management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, has ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged assault of a lecturer in the Department of Chinese Studies, Faculty of Arts, following an allegation of attempted sexual misconduct involving a female student.
The incident occurred within the university environment on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and was captured on video before the footage circulated widely on social media.
In a statement issued by the university’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Aloysius Attah, the management described the incident as unfortunate and condemned the use of violence, self-help and what it termed “jungle justice” under any circumstances.
The university said the Vice-Chancellor, Ugochukwu Anyaehie, had consistently reaffirmed UNIZIK’s zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct, harassment and other forms of inappropriate behaviour.
However, the management stressed that allegations of misconduct must be handled through established institutional procedures and due process.
“No individual or group is permitted to take the law into their own hands within the University environment,” the statement said.
Given the seriousness of the allegations, the university management ordered an immediate, comprehensive and impartial investigation to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
It said the matter was under full review, with appropriate administrative processes activated to ensure that justice was served fairly and objectively to all parties involved.
UNIZIK reiterated its commitment to protecting the dignity, safety and wellbeing of staff and students, assuring that decisive action would be taken against conduct that violates these principles.
The university also said further developments on the matter would be communicated in due course.
