The Founder of Unubiko Foundation, Chief James Ume, will on December 26, 2025, hand over a newly built and fully equipped Primary Health Care (PHC) centre to the Abia State Government and 13 housing units to widows in Atan Abam.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Tuesday during the weekly press briefing on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu said the gesture aligns with ongoing efforts by the Otti administration to strengthen the state’s primary healthcare system, which has recently received national recognition.
According to him, Abia State emerged as the Southeast winner in the 2025 Rafale Health Leadership Challenge and ranked among the top six performing states nationwide.
The award, presented by a consortium including the Nigerian government, French Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and others, comes with a $500,000 (approximately 750 million Naira) prize.
“The award recognises the state’s progress in 13 PHC system indicators, validating the transformative efforts in the health sector,” he added.
Recall that the state just concluded the 2025 Global Medical Outreach (December 15-28, 2025), where over 3,000 free medical treatments, including eye surgeries, were performed, and 62 health workers were trained with American Heart Association certification.
Another outreach is planned for January 7-12, 2026, in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives in North America.
He also announced that the Project Ekwueme, aiming to renovate, equip, and functionalize 948 primary health centers across Abia State, is progressing, with Phase 1 (200 PHCs) nearing 90% completion, while Phase 2 is set to kick off in the new year.
He also advised residents on public health precautions, including hygiene practices and accessing certified medical service and during the yuletide period.
“As part of the general ministry’s public health advice during the entire season, Abians should eat and drink responsibly, observe hygiene practices, eat clean, well-cooked, and stored foods to prevent food poisoning,” he said.
