Nigeria’s head coach, David Fizdale, believes D’Tigers’ emphatic 100-84 victory over Cape Verde was exactly the result his team needed to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup alive.
With the qualification campaign entering a decisive phase, Fizdale’s message to his players was straightforward: get the fifth victory and remain in contention.
D’Tigers responded in emphatic fashion, producing one of their most impressive offensive displays of the qualifying campaign to reach the century mark and improve their record to 5-4.
Speaking after the game, Fizdale admitted that the victory was vital to Nigeria’s hopes of progressing to the World Cup.
“We needed that win to stay in the fight and give ourselves a chance,” Fizdale said.
The American coach had made the importance of reaching five wins clear to his players before the game, stressing that another victory would leave Nigeria within touching distance of securing qualification.
“I told the guys if we get to five wins, we are within striking distance of qualifying in the next window,” he added.
The victory was built around a vastly improved offensive performance, with Nigeria finally finding their rhythm from beyond the three-point line after struggling to convert their opportunities in their opening two games of the window.
Caleb Agada led the scoring charge with a game-high 26 points while also contributing six assists, repeatedly causing problems for the Cape Verde defence.
Josh Okogie produced an all-around performance as the NBA star narrowly missed out on a triple-double. He finished with 15 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and four steals, combining his scoring with playmaking and defensive intensity.
Captain Ike Nwamu added 14 points, providing valuable leadership and scoring experience, while Efe Obogidi delivered an efficient display in the paint with 11 points.
For Fizdale, however, one of the biggest positives was Nigeria’s improved accuracy from distance.
After the struggles that had frustrated D’Tigers in their previous two games, the shots finally began to fall against Cape Verde.
“I was really happy; finally, we made 3s because we just couldn’t make shots the first two games,” Fizdale admitted.
Improved shooting helped Nigeria establish control and maintain their advantage as Cape Verde struggled to match the intensity and offensive output of the West Africans.
The victory means D’Tigers finish the latest qualifying window with five wins and four defeats, keeping them firmly in the battle for one of Africa’s tickets to the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
More importantly, Nigeria leave the window with renewed confidence after responding to a difficult stretch with a commanding performance when victory was essential.
For Fizdale, the target has now been achieved: D’Tigers have reached the five-win mark and remain within striking distance of qualification.
The challenge now shifts to the final phase of the campaign, where Nigeria will need to build on Sunday’s performance and turn their renewed momentum into a World Cup ticket.
