NCC Commemorates the 2024 International Girls in ICT Day
In observance of the 2024 International Girls in ICT Day, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has aligned itself with the global community.
Highlighting the significance of boosting the involvement of young women and girls in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, the Commission reiterated its commitment.
This annual event is marked on the fourth Thursday of April.
Through a statement posted on its Official Facebook page, the NCC showed solidarity with the worldwide ICT fraternity, extending best wishes to all girls on the occasion of International Girls in ICT Day.
The theme for this year’s celebration is centred around “Leadership,” underscoring the pivotal role of influential female figures in STEM careers.
While women currently hold 40 percent of high-skill positions internationally, their representation in ICT-related fields remains disproportionately low.
Women continue to be underrepresented in areas such as software, engineering, technology research, academia, and leadership roles within the industry.
The gender disparity is especially pronounced in STEM disciplines, where women often encounter obstacles in progressing to leadership positions.
In order to tackle these obstacles and promote gender parity in STEM fields, it is crucial to expose girls and young women to female leaders in the sector.
Through providing inspiration and dismantling barriers, the theme of Girls in ICT Day 2024 aims to empower girls and foster leadership development for a more inclusive future in STEM.
