Security Summit Convened by Lawmaker Following 34 Deaths in 3 Weeks Due to Cult Violence in Awka
Expressing concern over the recent surge in killings attributed to cult clashes in Awka, Henry Mbachu, the representative for Awka 1 State Constituency in the Anambra State House of Assembly, has highlighted the escalating safety concerns within the state capital.
In a video broadcast shared with NewsNow, Mbachu lamented the deteriorating security situation in Awka despite it being the administrative center of the state, where the governor, deputy governor, and top security officials reside.
He underscored the urgency of the situation, noting that approximately 34 young individuals have lost their lives in clashes involving suspected rival cult factions, underscoring the need for collective action.
Emphasizing the imperative for a strategic response, Mbachu urged stakeholders to collaborate effectively to address the root causes behind the violence, emphasizing that the issue extends beyond mere cult activities.
Pointing out the disturbing trend of escalating violence, the lawmaker urged for proactive measures to tackle the persistent security challenges that have plagued Awka, stressing the importance of united efforts towards lasting solutions.
Highlighting the pervasive atmosphere of fear and insecurity, Mbachu called upon the residents of Awka to participate in a security summit scheduled for May 29, aimed at fostering dialogue, generating actionable strategies, and formulating recommendations to enhance safety within the community.
