The children are currently receiving specialist medical attention at the T.Y. Danjuma Specialist Eye Hospital in Takum, following appeals that drew attention to their condition.
The T.Y. Danjuma Foundation has sent 50 children from Murbai in Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of Taraba State for specialist treatment after they developed eye problems.
The intervention came after reports emerged that several children in the community were experiencing eye problems.
The foundation said it received the appeal and subsequently mobilised to facilitate specialist assessment and treatment for the affected children.
It said the children were taken to the hospital so that specialist eye doctors could examine them and determine the nature and severity of their conditions before deciding on the appropriate treatment for each patient.
The foundation is taking responsibility for the children’s medical treatment, transportation, feeding and accommodation throughout the exercise.
The intervention is particularly significant, with the cost and availability of such services making treatment difficult for some families.
Residents and advocates who had drawn attention to the children’s plight commended the foundation for responding to the appeal and taking responsibility for their care.
They also acknowledged the individuals who helped publicise the condition of the children, saying their efforts contributed to bringing the situation to the attention of the foundation.
The development has highlighted the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing specialist healthcare, particularly services requiring expertise that may not be readily available at primary healthcare facilities.
For the affected families, the intervention provides an opportunity for their children to receive proper diagnosis and treatment.
