The upgrade of the Materials Testing Laboratory of the Enugu State Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is part of efforts to strengthen quality control and ensure compliance with engineering standards across infrastructural projects in the state.
The state Works Commissioner, Engr Ben Okoh, stated this when he inspected the project. NewsNGR reports that the upgrade of the laboratory involved the installation of modern testing equipment. Okoh said the upgraded facility would “significantly enhance the ministry’s capacity to test construction materials and independently verify their compliance with approved specifications and engineering standards”.
According to him, while the state government continues to deliver infrastructure at significant scale, equal attention is being given to the quality and durability of the projects.
In his words, “Quality remains non-negotiable. With this facility, we are better equipped to independently verify the materials used on our projects and ensure that the infrastructure we deliver meets the required standards and stands the test of time.”
Engr Okoh said the investment reflects the commitment of the administration of Governor Peter Mbah to strengthening the institutions responsible for infrastructure delivery and equipping them with the tools required to effectively discharge their responsibilities.
The upgraded Materials Testing Laboratory will support the state government’s ongoing infrastructure development programme by providing reliable testing of construction materials and helping to ensure that public infrastructure across Enugu State is delivered to the required standards, he said.
The commissioner also inspected the ongoing construction of the Tanker Park along the Enugu–Abakaliki expressway. He said the project was aimed at improving road safety, traffic management and tanker operations along the corridors.
According to him, the park is designed to provide a safe and organised facility for tanker operators, reduce indiscriminate parking along the expressway and the attendant risks to motorists and other road users. He said the facilities expected to be provided at the park are a motel, restaurant and other support amenities “where drivers can rest, eat and sleep, particularly when they arrive late or are unable to safely continue their journeys”.
He said it was also conceived to preserve road infrastructure as well as decongest traffic in the state metropolis. Quoting him, “It will also protect road infrastructure and create economic opportunities through accommodation, food services, vehicle maintenance and other businesses supporting tanker operations. The Tanker Park forms part of the broader infrastructural development agenda of Governor Peter Mbah to reposition Enugu State through strategic investments that support economic growth and improve the movement of people and goods.”
He added that the ministry would continue to closely supervise ongoing projects across the state to ensure quality workmanship, timely delivery and value for public resources.
He added, “Across all our project sites, our emphasis remains the same: quality, timely delivery and infrastructure that responds to the needs of our people and supports the economic transformation of Enugu State.”
