The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies found in separate locations in Kurudu and Gwagwalada areas of Abuja.
The two incidents occurred on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, with the police launching investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the abandonment and identify the babies’ mothers or family members.
In the first incident, a resident of Kurudu, identified as Innocent, reportedly heard the cry of a baby at about 5:30pm around Obodo Street in the area.
According to the police, the statement signed by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh on Friday. the resident inspected the area and discovered a baby boy carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned inside a carton box.
He subsequently reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45pm.
Police officers from the Kurudu Division, alongside personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department, were immediately deployed to the scene and rescued the child.
The baby was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment and was found to be in stable condition.
The police said necessary documentation had been completed before the child was handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care.
In a separate incident later the same day, a resident of Gwagwalada, identified as Ibrahim, heard the cry of a baby outside his gate at about 9:40pm. Upon checking, he discovered a baby girl who appeared to have been abandoned at the premises.
Ibrahim, assisted by other concerned residents, rescued the child and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.
The police said personnel from the Juveniles and Women Care Department subsequently took the baby girl to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination and treatment.
The child is currently receiving medical care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department.
The Command said it had commenced efforts to determine how the babies were abandoned and identify their mothers and other relatives.
The FCT Police Command commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other members of the public who intervened to rescue the children and notify the authorities.
It urged anyone with information that could help identify the mothers or relatives of the babies to contact the nearest police station or the Command’s Public Relations Officer.
