The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has identified inadequate drainage systems, undersized bridges and obstruction of natural waterways as major causes of flash flooding in parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
The findings followed a joint assessment of flood-prone locations by the FCTA and relevant emergency management and technical agencies after recent flooding along the Lugbe Airport Road axis, opposite Glory Dome.
The assessment, conducted on September 1, 2026, was led by the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and involved officials of the FCT Emergency Management Department (FEMD), Department of Engineering, Development Control and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
According to a statement by the Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, on Friday, the exercise was aimed at identifying the causes of flash flooding and assessing the condition of drainage channels, bridges and waterways around affected areas.
