“FG Raises Hazard Allowance For NASU Members In Federal Universities To ₦486,000 Annually” — New Package Takes Effect January 1, 2026

The Federal Government has approved an upward review of hazard allowances, responsibility allowances and other earned benefits payable to members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions in federal universities.

Under the revised remuneration package, the laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowance for senior employees will increase by as much as ₦126,000 annually, while eligible junior workers will receive an additional ₦63,000 per year.

The new package takes effect retrospectively from January 1, 2026.

The approval was contained in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on July 20, 2026, following an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026.

The circular, signed by the commission’s Acting Secretary, Adighiogu A. Chiadi, was addressed to the Chief of Staff to the President, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, ministers, permanent secretaries, heads of government agencies and other senior public officials.

It stated that the Federal Government had approved the payment of the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance and reviewed earned allowances for eligible NASU members working in federal universities.

“Following the agreement between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions dated 29th June 2026, the Federal Government has approved the payment of the following allowances to non-teaching staff members of NASU in federal universities,” the circular stated.

It added that the reviewed remuneration package would take effect from January 1, 2026.

One of the most significant adjustments is the increase in the laboratory, workshop, studio, clinical and occupational hazard allowance.

For workers on the Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure levels one to five, the annual allowance was raised from ₦180,000 under the 2009 agreement to ₦243,000, representing an increase of ₦63,000.

NASU had requested an annual allowance of ₦360,000 for workers in the category.

For employees on CONTISS levels six to 15, the annual hazard allowance increased from ₦360,000 to ₦486,000, representing an additional ₦126,000. The approved amount was, however, lower than the union’s demand of ₦720,000 annually.

The government retained call duty, shift duty and clinical hazard allowances in accordance with existing circulars issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.

On high-risk allowance, the commission said payment would continue to be implemented through the Employee Compensation framework under the Employees’ Compensation Act 2010 and its circular dated September 22, 2023, rather than through a fixed annual payment.

NASU had demanded a fixed high-risk allowance of ₦300,000 annually for all affected workers.

The government also approved increased responsibility allowances for senior non-teaching officials in federal universities.

The annual responsibility allowance payable to registrars and bursars increased from ₦750,000, equivalent to ₦62,500 monthly, to ₦840,000, or ₦70,000 monthly.

NASU had demanded ₦1.5 million annually, equivalent to ₦125,000 monthly, for registrars and bursars.

Directors, who previously had no responsibility allowance, will now receive ₦600,000 annually, or ₦50,000 monthly, in line with the amount requested by the union.

Deputy registrars, deputy bursars and deputy directors will receive a newly introduced responsibility allowance of ₦480,000 annually, equivalent to ₦40,000 monthly.

The union had requested ₦600,000 annually, or ₦50,000 monthly, for officials in the category.

For heads of departments and units, the responsibility allowance increased from ₦300,000 annually, or ₦25,000 monthly, to ₦360,000 annually, equivalent to ₦30,000 monthly.

NASU had demanded ₦600,000 annually, or ₦50,000 monthly.

Heads of sections, who previously had no approved responsibility allowance, will now receive ₦150,000 annually, equivalent to ₦12,500 monthly.

The approved amount was significantly lower than the union’s demand of ₦900,000 annually, or ₦75,000 monthly.

The circular also reviewed allowances payable for field trips, teaching practice and industrial supervision.

Workers on CONTISS levels one to five will receive ₦81,000 annually, up from ₦60,000, while NASU had requested ₦120,000.

For workers on CONTISS levels six to 12, the allowance increased from ₦80,000 to ₦108,000 annually, against the union’s demand of ₦160,000.

Employees on CONTISS levels 13 to 15 will receive ₦135,000 annually, an increase from ₦100,000, while NASU had demanded ₦200,000.

The Students Work Experience Programme allowance was also reviewed upward.

Workers on CONTISS levels one to five will receive ₦81,000 annually, compared with the previous ₦60,000 and the union’s demand of ₦120,000.

For CONTISS levels six to 12, the allowance rose from ₦80,000 to ₦108,000 annually, while NASU had requested ₦160,000.

For employees on CONTISS levels 13 to 15, the previous allowance ranging from ₦60,000 to ₦100,000 annually was harmonised at ₦135,000. The union had demanded ₦200,000 annually.

The government also introduced annual uniform and protective-wear allowances for laboratory, workshop and studio personnel who previously received no such benefit.

Workers on CONTISS levels one to five, six to 12 and 13 to 15 will each receive ₦80,000 annually.
