Lagos Police To Impound Vehicles Without Number Plates From Monday

The Lagos State Police Command has announced plans to commence the arrest and impoundment of vehicles with missing, covered, defaced, or fake number plates across the state.

The enforcement exercise will begin on Monday following a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu. The operation will be supervised by the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Tijani Fatai.

All Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers have been directed to enforce the order within their respective jurisdictions. Vehicles found in violation of the directive will be seized, impounded, and subjected to investigation.

The police said the operation is aimed at preventing criminals from concealing their identities through the use of covered, altered, or fake number plates.

“This is not meant to trouble law-abiding motorists,” the command’s Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said on Sunday.

The command added that the exercise is a security measure designed to help law enforcement officers identify vehicles, track suspects, and combat crime more effectively.

Motorists were advised to ensure that their number plates are valid, clearly visible, and properly issued by the appropriate authorities. Vehicle owners were also urged to keep their documents up to date and readily available for inspection when required.

The command further called on residents to report suspicious vehicles through its emergency lines: 07061019374, 08065154338, 08063299264, 08039344870, and 09168630929.
