A man identified as Ahmad Dankoli was killed by an angry mob in Balare, Ajingi Local Government Area of Kano State, after he was accused of attempting to steal a motorcycle.
The incident occurred on Sunday night during the community’s weekly market, where traders and residents reportedly descended on the suspect after he was allegedly caught trying to make away with a motorcycle.
According to the councillor representing Balare Ward, Shu’aibu Abdulmumin Yalo, efforts by security operatives to recover the body were unsuccessful as the crowd overpowered them and later set the corpse on fire.
Yalo said the community has witnessed a surge in motorcycle theft in recent months, with more than 30 motorcycles reportedly stolen from the market, a situation he said has heightened tension among residents.
The incident disrupted commercial activities, forcing traders to shut down the market prematurely, while normal business resumed on Monday.
The Kano State Police Command said it had yet to receive an official report on the incident.
Police spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, told NewsNGR that the command would verify the circumstances surrounding the killing and commence an investigation.
