National Grid Collapses, Drops From 4,800MW To 139MW As All 22 Power Plants Lose Generation

The national grid collapsed on Monday, plunging many Nigerians into darkness after major power plants lost generation.

The grid went down around 3 pm, according to checks by our correspondent.

Power generation had peaked at about 4,800 megawatts earlier on Monday before crashing to 139MW as of 3 pm, according to data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO).

As of the time of filing this report, all 22 power plants connected to the grid had lost generation.

The cause of the collapse could not be immediately confirmed. However, it occurred at a time when the Nigerian Independent System Operator was making efforts to ramp up generation following recent gas constraints caused by pipeline vandalism.

According to NISO data, power generation dropped from 2,052.37 megawatts to 139.92MW between 2 pm and 3 pm.

Out of 11 electricity distribution companies, NISO said only three were able to load 120MW during the period.

Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) accounted for 80MW, while Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) took 20MW, and Benin Electricity Distribution Company received 20MW.

All other distribution companies, including Eko, Enugu, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, and Yola, recorded zero allocation.
