Former Governor of Anambra State and former Executive Director, Business Banking, as well as the second-in-command in the top management hierarchy of Fidelity Bank Plc before his retirement in 2012, Chief Willie Maduabuchi Obiano, has paid glowing tribute to the bank’s pioneer Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Nebolisa Arah, on the occasion of his 75th birthday, describing him as the visionary banker whose leadership transformed Fidelity from a modest corporate finance institution into one of Nigeria’s most respected commercial banks.
In a heartfelt birthday message, Obiano, who worked under Arah’s leadership at Fidelity Bank, reflected on the profound impact the banking veteran had on the institution and on the generation of professionals he mentored.
According to Obiano, Arah’s greatest legacy was not merely in building a successful financial institution but in establishing a culture of integrity, professionalism, discipline and excellence that has continued to define Fidelity Bank decades after his retirement.
“Mr. Nebolisa Arah laid the foundation upon which Fidelity Bank became one of Nigeria’s foremost financial institutions. His vision, ethical leadership and unwavering commitment to professionalism created an institution that earned public trust and industry respect,” Obiano stated.
He recalled that when Arah assumed leadership, Fidelity operated largely as a niche wholesale merchant bank established to finance the businesses of its founders. Through strategic reforms and prudent management, however, Arah repositioned the institution into an independent national commercial bank with a clear corporate identity and long-term growth strategy.
Obiano noted that one of Arah’s most significant achievements was successfully navigating the bank’s transition into commercial banking in 1999 before securing the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Universal Banking Licence in February 2001, a milestone that expanded the bank’s capacity to offer a wider range of financial services.
“He transformed Fidelity into a truly competitive commercial bank by broadening its product offerings, strengthening governance structures and investing in people. Those were defining moments in the bank’s history,” Obiano remarked.
He further highlighted Arah’s aggressive expansion programme, which saw Fidelity’s branch network grow from only four branches in 1999 to 19 strategically located branches across major commercial centres, including Aba, Idumagbo and Abuja, within a few years.

Under Arah’s leadership, the bank also introduced innovative retail products such as the Nigeria International Growth Fund (NIGFUND), Fidelity Sweeta Account for children and several asset-backed financing solutions that expanded its customer base.
Obiano also credited the banking icon with laying the technological foundation that modernised Fidelity’s operations through the introduction of computerised banking systems, telephone banking services and early GSM-based SMS transaction notifications at a time when digital banking was still evolving in Nigeria.
Perhaps most importantly, Obiano said, Arah understood that enduring institutions are built through people.
“He deliberately invested in talent development and succession planning. By the time he voluntarily retired in December 2003, he had groomed a strong management team that ensured a seamless transition of leadership. That is the hallmark of a truly transformational leader,” he observed.
Describing Arah as an exceptional mentor, Obiano acknowledged the personal privilege of serving under him, saying the values of discipline, accountability, strategic thinking and humility he learnt during those years continued to shape his own leadership journey in banking and later in public service.
“As we celebrate your 75th birthday, we honour not only your remarkable achievements in banking but also your enduring contributions to institution-building and human capital development. Nigeria’s financial sector remains richer because of your vision and service.
“On behalf of my family, I congratulate you on this milestone and pray that Almighty God grants you more years in good health, peace and fulfilment,” Obiano said.
At 75, Nebolisa Arah stands tall among the architects of modern Nigerian banking, a quiet reformer whose enduring legacy is measured not only by the institution he built but also by the generations of banking professionals he inspired.
