North-East To Get 3 DIGs In IGP’s Zonal Security Overhaul

The North-East geopolitical zone may get three out of the 8 Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) that the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Disu, reployed on Tuesday, NEWSNGR findings show.

Other zones (North-Central, North-West, South-East, South-South and South-West) will get one each.

The North-East’s three DIGs are drawn from Taraba, Adamawa and Yobe States. The deployment takes effect June 15, 2026.

Disu announced the directive on Tuesday in Abuja, in a bid to tighten supervision and bring the command closer to the field.

“It is in furtherance of our operational objective that I have approved the deployment of Deputy Inspector General of Police to their respective geopolitical zone with effect from Monday 15 June 2026,” the IGP said.

“This initiative is designed to strengthen supervision, improve operational coordination, enhance accountability, and provide closer strategic oversight of policing activities within their zones.

“The DIGs of police are expected to work closely with the Assistant Inspector General of police and Commissioners of Police in ensuring that operational directives are effectively implemented and measurable results achieved.”

The move comes as security agencies across the country contend with insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and communal conflicts.

“Across the countries, our officers continue to operate under difficult and often dangerous circumstances, confronting diverse security threats while remaining steadfast in their constitutional duty to protect lives and property. I commend your commitment and sacrifice being made daily by officers and men under your respective commands,” he said.
