Police Intercept 174 AK-47 Rounds, Arrest Suspect In Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has arrested a suspected arms trafficker and recovered 174 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition during a patrol operation along the Toto–Abaji Road.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lafia, describing the operation as part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal arms trafficking and enhance public safety across the state.

According to Nansel, operatives attached to the Toto Division intercepted the suspect, identified as Abubakar Abdullahi, during a routine patrol on June 22, 2026.

A subsequent search led to the recovery of 174 rounds of live ammunition for AK-47 rifles concealed in his possession.

He said preliminary investigations showed that the suspect failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source, ownership, or intended destination of the ammunition.

“The suspect is currently in custody, while intensive investigations are ongoing to uncover the criminal network behind the illegal movement of the ammunition and apprehend other accomplices,” Nansel stated.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling all forms of criminality, particularly the proliferation of illegal arms and ammunition.

He warned criminal elements to abandon unlawful activities or face the full weight of the law, noting that the command has strengthened intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, and strategic deployments across the state.

“There will be no safe haven for criminals in Nasarawa State. We are determined to identify, track, and bring every offender to justice,” the commissioner said.

Mohammed also assured residents of the command’s resolve to protect lives and property and urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information.

He added that the police command remains committed to a zero-tolerance approach to crime and will continue to deploy all lawful measures to safeguard residents and maintain public security.
