The Uhuala Development Association Lagos State on Saturday, 21st June, 2026, held its first annual congress in the serene city of Ijesha, Lagos, bringing together sons and daughters of Uhuala community from Etiti Okabia, Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State residing in Lagos.
The event, tagged “The First Uhuala Annual Congress,” was hosted by the current executive led by the Chairman, Chief Ben Obi, who delivered a welcome address to patrons, matrons, elders, members of the women’s wing, and invited guests at the gathering.
Among the dignitaries who attended the event were the Grand Patron of the association, Chief Paul Eze (Ebube Olisa), Deacon Thompson Oluo, Chief Hyacinth Chukwudi, and members of the women’s wing under the Chairmanship of Chief Vincent Odidika.
In his address obtained by http://newsngr.com, Chief Ben Obi expressed appreciation to all members and guests for honouring the invitation to the historic event. He prayed that God Almighty would bless attendees immensely in all ramifications.
Chief Obi explained that the Uhuala Development Association Lagos State is an association of the sons and daughters of Uhuala community currently residing in Lagos. He stated that the platform was created for members from different walks of life to connect, unify, and share socio-cultural beliefs, norms, and values for the interest, welfare, growth, and development of Uhuala.
According to the chairman, the association warmly embraces members with love, joy, and empathy, and also sympathizes with them during moments of grief, pain, and other challenges. He described the association as worthy of belonging to as a full and registered member.
Chief Ben Obi said the annual congress is an innovation pioneered by his administration and the executives, specifically designed to reflect and celebrate the culture, identity, and core values of Uhuala people. He added that the event was created to create more awareness about the union’s existence and boost its numerical strength in Lagos.
He noted that the congress is an annual event aimed at ensuring the convergence and unification of all sons and daughters of Uhuala residing in Lagos State. The chairman said the goal is deeper acquaintance, reflection of shared vision, celebration of existence, cultural values, and promotion of ideas that pertain to the growth and advancement of Uhuala as an entity.
The chairman disclosed that the current executive was inaugurated a year ago on June 8, 2025, and has recorded several achievements within one year to sustain and consolidate on the work of the former regime headed by Deacon Thompson Oluo.
Some of the achievements listed by Chief Obi included the official registration and approval of the Uhuala Development Association Lagos State by the Corporate Affairs Commission of Nigeria. He also listed the creation of the Board of Trustees for the association, and the submission of the reviewed and amended 2009 constitution for deliberation by house members.
Other achievements mentioned included the review and upgrade of the association’s logo to reflect its slogan, identity, and culture, the review and upgrade of official correspondence, and the successful planning and conduct of the first ever annual congress to celebrate values, identity, and culture.
Chief Obi also listed ensuring peace, unity, love, empathy, and respect as hallmark values for both men and women’s wing, as well as hospitality towards health and medically challenged members, as key priorities of his administration.
Looking ahead, the chairman announced strategic plans being worked out by his administration to transform Uhuala community. The plans include reviving and restoring strength to the moribund mother union, renovating and upgrading the village hall at home, and initiating financial support for widows, the poor, and less privileged in the community.
Further plans outlined included health and life insurance policy for members, educational support grants to deserving members, collaboration with Etiti-Okabia central government to attract infrastructural projects and basic amenities, creation of the “Umu-Ada” wing, and creation of the office of Mayor of Uhuala Development Association Lagos State.
The activities for the day’s congress included the inauguration of Board of Trustees (BOT) members, inauguration of new executives of the women’s wing, medical and health tips presentation, presentation of certificates of return to executives of both men’s and women’s wing, and presentation of certificates of recognition to BOT members, patron, and matron/grand matron.
The event also featured cultural dance by the union women’s wing and a masquerade display as side attraction. Chief Ben Obi concluded his address by appreciating members who supported financially and with time, the Annual Congress Committee led by Mr Sunday Ifeanyichukwu Iheofor, elders, patrons, matrons, and all invited guests for making the dream of the first annual congress a reality.
