Nigeria’s teenage tennis prospect Oluwaseun Ogunsakin has secured his first Grand Slam main-draw victory after defeating 15th seed Kuan-Shou Chen of Chinese Taipei in a thrilling three-set contest at the US Open Junior Tennis Championships.
The victory marks the first time Ogunsakin has won a match in the main draw of a Grand Slam junior tournament.
His breakthrough comes after an impressive qualifying campaign in New York, where he defeated Poland’s Tymon Litwic 6-3, 6-0 before producing a major upset against top seed Felix Roussel of Canada, winning 6-3, 6-4 to earn his place in the 64-player main draw.
Ogunsakin then completed another significant milestone by overcoming Chen in a contest that lasted three sets and required him to remain composed in the decisive stages.
The victory continues a rapid rise for the Nigerian teenager, who is competing in his third consecutive Grand Slam junior tournament.
He began his Grand Slam journey at the Roland Garros Junior Championships, where he reached the second round of qualifying, before making the main draw at Wimbledon.
At Wimbledon, Ogunsakin also reached the semi-finals of the boys’ doubles competition, further underlining his growing presence on the international junior circuit.
His progression at the US Open means he has now achieved main-draw appearances at Wimbledon and the US Open, while also advancing through qualifying at Roland Garros.
Ogunsakin will face South Africa’s Connor Doig in the second round of the US Open Junior Championships.
The Nigerian youngster is also set to compete in the doubles event, partnering Ntungamili Raguin, the history-making teenage tennis sensation from Botswana.
