A group identifying itself as Biafran Veterans has reaffirmed its support for the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, urging Biafrans to remain united and disciplined amid internal divisions within the movement.
A statement issued on Monday and signed by Elder Sunday I. Nwokejie G.C of Biafraland and Colonel Emma U. Kalu, the group declared its “total, unwavering support” for Kanu, whom it described as the “Supreme Leader of IPOB and the arrowhead of the Biafra Restoration struggle.”
The veterans praised Kanu’s sacrifices, saying he had remained steadfast despite years of detention and hardship.
“Onyendu is a man who has been tested by fire. He cannot be bought. He is incorruptible. He has sacrificed more than any person alive for Biafra.
“He gave up comfort and safety to speak for our people. He has endured illegal detention, suffering, and years in prison without committing any crime,” the statement read.
The group further described Kanu as “the face of Biafra the whole world knows,” adding that “his plans protected our land from large-scale Fulani attacks.”
Reaffirming its loyalty, the veterans stated, “We stand 100% behind him. No one can challenge his God-given mandate to restore Biafra.”
The statement also criticized individuals allegedly fueling divisions within the pro-Biafra movement.
“Those making noise and causing division are people who have endured very little of what Onyendu has borne. As veterans who have seen many seasons of the struggle, we know genuine leadership when we see it. Onyendu remains our leader,” it said.
Calling for unity, the group urged Biafrans to “close ranks, stay united, disciplined, and focused,” while also expressing support for the “4th Directorate of State.”
“This is not the time for division or personal ambition. It is time to stand firmly behind our leader,” the statement added.
Addressing Kanu directly, the veterans said, “Remain strong. Millions stand with you. We pray daily for your immediate and unconditional release. Your sacrifices will not be in vain. Victory is coming.”
IPOB has been proscribed as a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government, a designation the group rejects.
Kanu was convicted in 2025 on terrorism-related charges and is serving a life sentence in Sokoto Prison.
