Four members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), a soldier, and another passenger have lost their lives in a fatal road accident along the Girei–Song Highway in Adamawa State.
The crash involved a military gun truck travelling from Gombi to Yola and a commercial Hummer bus conveying passengers from Yola to Mubi.
Eyewitnesses said the collision caused the commercial bus to overturn before it burst into flames, trapping the occupants.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Adamawa State Police Command, SP Suleiman Ngurore, said the accident occurred in the Narehi area of Girei Local Government Area at about 1:50 p.m.
According to him, all five passengers in the Hummer bus were burnt to death after the vehicle caught fire following the collision.
“Preliminary identification revealed that four of the deceased were members of the National Youth Service Corps posted to Adamawa State,” he said.
Ngurore identified two of the victims as Suleiman Juliet and Usman Shuaibu, both from Kaduna State, adding that efforts were ongoing to establish the identities of the remaining victims.
He also confirmed that a soldier travelling in the military vehicle died as a result of the crash.
Police officers and emergency responders were deployed to the scene, while the bodies of the victims were evacuated to the Specialist Hospital in Yola.
The police spokesperson said investigations were ongoing and assured that relatives of the deceased would be contacted as soon as identification processes are completed.
Authorities have pledged to provide further updates as the investigation progresses.
