“Pay Back ₦67.6m To Victim” — Court Jails Couple 14 Years Each For Conspiracy, Stealing, False Pretence
The Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja has sentenced a couple, Harry Uyanwanne and Oluwakemi Odia, also known as Kristein Uyanwanne, to a total of 14 years’ imprisonment each after convicting them of conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money by false pretence in a ₦67.6 million fraud case.
Justice Mojisola Dada, who delivered judgment on Monday, November 2, 2026, also ordered the convicts to make full restitution of ₦67,659,592 to the petitioner, Olusola Odemuyiwa.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission disclosed the conviction in a statement issued on Tuesday.
According to the commission, the defendants were prosecuted on a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing, obtaining money by false pretence and forgery.
Justice Dada held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt on the first three counts and consequently convicted the defendants. They were, however, discharged on the forgery count.
The court sentenced each defendant to three years’ imprisonment for conspiracy, one year for stealing and 10 years for obtaining money by false pretence, without an option of fine.
The judge further ordered that the sentence imposed on the first defendant be suspended until he is apprehended.
The defendants had pleaded not guilty when arraigned, prompting the prosecution, led by Fadeke Giwa, to call three witnesses and tender several documents in support of its case. The defence called one witness.
The prosecution’s case included allegations that the defendants fraudulently dealt with property belonging to the beneficiaries of the estate of the late Dr Moshood Babatunde Odemuyiwa.
One of the counts alleged that in 2010, the defendants sold a property at Plot 19, Murtala Mohammed Way, Ebute Meta, Oyingbo, Lagos, for ₦16 million while falsely representing that they had been authorised by the beneficiaries of the late Odemuyiwa’s estate to dispose of the property.
The EFCC maintained that the representation was false and that the defendants had no authority from the beneficiaries to sell the property.
It also alleged that the defendants conspired to dishonestly take possession of property belonging to the beneficiaries of the estate, contrary to the Criminal Law of Lagos State.
After reviewing the evidence presented by both sides, Justice Dada found the defendants guilty on the conspiracy, stealing and false pretence counts and ordered them to refund the full ₦67,659,592 to the petitioner.
