Sokoto Doubles NYSC Allowance To N20,000
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, has doubled the monthly allowance for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state from N10,000 to N20,000, with immediate effect.
The governor also approved a one-off cash gift of N30,000 each for the 1,523 corps members participating in the 2026 Batch C Stream Two orientation exercise.
Aliyu announced the measures on Saturday while declaring open the orientation course at the temporary NYSC camp, College of Administrative and Business Studies, Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic, Farfaru Campus, Sokoto.
On outstanding state allowances owed to corps members, the governor said a committee had been constituted to review the unpaid entitlements following an appeal by the NYSC State Coordinator.
He, however, directed that payment of the increased monthly allowance should commence immediately.
Aliyu also donated a brand-new Hilux vehicle to the NYSC State Coordinator for official use and directed the immediate repair of water and electricity facilities at the orientation camp to improve the welfare of corps members.
The governor further approved the slaughter of five cows daily throughout the orientation exercise to ensure adequate feeding for the participants.
He also announced cash prizes of N1 million for winners of the crocodile race and N500,000 for the runners-up during the swearing-in ceremony.
Aliyu urged the corps members to abide by the rules and regulations of the NYSC scheme and uphold its core national values.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development, national unity and the welfare of corps members serving in the state.
The governor also assured the participants that Sokoto remained peaceful and hospitable, pledging to protect them and provide an enabling environment for them to serve, learn and contribute to the development of the state and the country.
Speaking at the event, NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Tyoyer Gabriel, disclosed that out of the 2,100 corps members allocated to Sokoto State, only 1,523 reported to the orientation camp.
Gabriel commended the state government for its continued support for the scheme, particularly the ongoing renovation of the permanent orientation camp in Wamakko.
Earlier, the State Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, Alhaji Almustapha Sidi, congratulated the corps members and urged them to remain focused on their national service.
He also assured them of adequate security and welfare throughout their stay in the state.
Highlights of the ceremony included a parade, the administration of the oath of allegiance to the corps members and other activities.
