“Eligible Officers Could Retire On Benefits Linked To Their Last Salaries” — IGP Disu Proposes 200% Gratuity For Police Retirees

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has proposed a 200 per cent gratuity for retired police officers as part of a broader reform package aimed at addressing longstanding pension and welfare challenges in the Nigeria Police Force.
Under the proposed arrangement, eligible retired officers could also receive monthly pension benefits linked to their final salaries, alongside the enhanced gratuity.
The proposal is currently being considered by a presidential committee established to examine the concerns of serving and retired police personnel and recommend sustainable solutions to the Force’s pension challenges.
The committee comprises representatives of the Federal Ministry of Finance, Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission, Budget Office of the Federation and National Pension Commission.
Disu said the initiative was part of intensified efforts to improve retirement benefits for police personnel and resolve complaints that have persisted over inadequate pensions, delayed payments and the administration of retirement benefits.
“Under the proposed arrangement, eligible officers could retire on pension benefits linked to their last salaries, alongside the enhanced gratuity,” he said.
The proposed reforms are also expected to address persistent demands by serving and retired police officers for changes to their participation in the Contributory Pension Scheme, which has remained a contentious issue within the Force.
Police retirees have repeatedly complained about the level of benefits available under the existing pension arrangement, while agitation over the scheme has led to demonstrations and calls for a more favourable framework for officers after retirement.
Beyond the proposed 200 per cent gratuity, the reform initiative seeks to resolve outstanding pension liabilities, improve retirement benefits and establish a more efficient system for administering benefits due to former police personnel.
The proposal also seeks to ensure that officers who retired before the introduction of any new framework are not automatically excluded.
Under the plan being considered, the benefits of existing retirees could be reviewed in line with any revised terms eventually approved by the Federal Government.
The development follows interventions by President Bola Tinubu’s administration over concerns raised by retired officers about inadequate retirement benefits, delayed payments and administrative bottlenecks.
Disu said the Federal Government had cleared pension payment backlogs that had previously left some retirees waiting for as long as two years.
He also said pension increases had been introduced, with some beneficiaries receiving payments almost twice their previous benefits.
The Inspector-General’s engagement with the Presidency, PenCom and other relevant government institutions is expected to continue as authorities consider questions surrounding funding, outstanding liabilities and the administration of any revised pension framework.
The presidential committee is expected to make recommendations on how outstanding liabilities should be addressed, how the proposed benefits would be funded and which categories of serving and retired personnel would qualify.
However, the proposed 200 per cent gratuity is not yet an approved entitlement.
Its implementation remains subject to the committee’s recommendations, subsequent government approval, availability of funding and the issuance of implementation guidelines.
The eventual decision is also expected to determine whether any approved changes will apply only to officers approaching retirement or extend fully to existing police pensioners.
The proposal forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to review police salaries, allowances, pensions and other welfare packages, with the government saying earlier in 2026 that it was examining the welfare of both serving and retired personnel.
