“I Have Seen The Light, Tinubu Is Laying A Solid Foundation” — Okowa Explains Why He Dumped Atiku, Backs President’s Re-Election

Former Delta State Governor and 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, has explained his decision to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, declaring that he has “seen the light” and believes the President is laying a solid foundation for Nigeria’s future.
Okowa, who was the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election, made the declaration on Saturday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
The former governor said his support for Tinubu was informed by his conviction that the President’s policies were putting Nigeria on the right path towards sustainable development.
“I have seen the light. Today, we are on the right track because the president is laying a solid foundation,” Okowa declared.
He maintained that the current administration was taking steps necessary to strengthen the country’s economic foundation and secure a better future for Nigerians.
Okowa also defended the removal of petroleum subsidy, warning against any attempt to restore the policy.
According to him, the subsidy regime had contributed to the destruction of Nigeria’s economic foundation, and those responsible for the previous arrangement should not be allowed to reverse the progress being made.
He warned that returning to the subsidy regime could “destroy the future of our children.”
His remarks underscored his support for the economic direction of the Tinubu administration, particularly its decision to discontinue fuel subsidy.
Okowa’s declaration also highlighted his political realignment since the 2023 presidential election, when he contested alongside Atiku against Tinubu.
While he did not provide further details about his relationship with Atiku, the former governor made clear that he now supports Tinubu’s continued leadership, arguing that the President is laying the foundation for Nigeria’s future development.
He consequently urged support for the administration’s direction, maintaining that the country should continue on its present path rather than return to policies he believes had undermined its economic foundation.
