NNPC Disputes NISO’s Gas Constraint Claim, Says Network Fully Available

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has dismissed gas transportation constraints as a cause of declining electricity generation in the country.
It insisted that its gas infrastructure network remains fully available to support deliveries to power plants nationwide.
NNPC Limited said the operational records of its subsidiary, NNPC Gas Infrastructure Company Limited (NGIC), showed no transportation-related constraints within its network that could explain the drop in electricity generation.
It clarified this in a statement signed by its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Andy Odeh, Saturday night in Abuja.
The clarification followed a statement by the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) on November 5, which attributed lower electricity generation to limited gas availability and reduced water inflows to hydroelectric stations.
However, NNPC said its clarification related specifically to the operational status of NGIC’s gas transportation network, noting that gas production, commercial supply arrangements and actual deliveries to individual power plants were separate issues that required independent assessment.
The company said it remained focused on implementing the Federal Government’s gas development and monetisation agenda, which had driven about 10 per cent growth in gas production volumes year-to-date in 2026.
It added that gas supply availability was not a challenge, reaffirming its commitment to supporting improved electricity generation through safe, reliable and efficient gas supply and transportation.
NNPC said a comprehensive assessment of the electricity generation shortfall should also examine the availability and operational readiness of generating units, plant maintenance schedules and actual gas offtake.
According to the company, these factors determine whether available gas supplies can be converted into electricity and should be verified alongside gas supply data to establish the causes of the generation shortfall.
It expressed support for a coordinated review of operational data by gas suppliers, transporters, power generators and NISO to identify specific constraints and guide effective interventions.
The company stated that accurate reporting across the gas-to-power value chain was essential to resolving the challenges and sustaining public confidence.
NNPC Limited said its focus remained on dependable energy infrastructure and collaboration to ensure Nigeria’s gas resources translated into more reliable electricity for Nigerians.
