NDC expels Borno Assembly candidate over alleged Atiku campaign posters

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, in Borno State has expelled its House of Assembly candidate, Mohammed Bunu, over alleged involvement in campaign activities promoting the African Democratic Congress, ADC, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
The decision was conveyed in a letter dated October 25, 2026, signed by the party’s state Deputy Chairman, Umar Fema, and addressed to Bunu.
The letter said the disciplinary action followed the discovery of campaign materials bearing the ADC logo, the slogan “SABON TAFIYA, SABON SALO”, and the photographs and names of Atiku and Bunu.
The party said Bunu’s alleged involvement in the campaign raised concerns about his loyalty, political allegiance and commitment to the NDC.
According to the letter, the disciplinary process began at the Hausari Ward level before the matter was referred to the party leadership in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council for investigation and further consideration.
The party said the Hausari Ward Executive invited Bunu to appear before it at about 10am on October 23 to respond to allegations that he participated in campaign activities associated with another political party.
“According to the report submitted by the ward leadership, you did not appear to defend yourself,” the letter stated.
Fema said the ward secretary, Rabiu Umar, subsequently recommended disciplinary action and referred the matter to the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council Working Committee.
The letter added that Bunu was invited again on October 24 to appear before an investigation committee but allegedly failed to attend.
After reviewing the committee’s report, the MMC party chairman, Adamu Ibrahim, endorsed the recommendation for disciplinary action and forwarded the matter to the state leadership, according to the letter.
The NDC said its decision was based on the allegations examined and reports submitted through its internal disciplinary structure.
The letter, however, stated that any action affecting Bunu’s status as a party candidate should be distinguished from the separate question of terminating or expelling his party membership.
It also directed Bunu to refrain from presenting himself as authorised to act on behalf of the party in any capacity affected by a valid and effective disciplinary decision.
