The Founder of Unubiko Foundation, Chief Chijioke James Ume Junior, has donated N20m towards the construction of a proposed N1b ultra-modern hall for Abam Onyerubi.

Ume made the donation at the 2026 Abam Day celebration held on Saturday at the Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic Pavilion, Aba, where he served as the Chief Launcher of the project.

The philanthropist, who was represented at the event by a former Mayor of Arochukwu Local Government Area, Prince Dan Kalu, said the donation reflected his commitment to community development and the promotion of unity among Abam people.

The fundraising initiative attracted substantial financial contributions from other sons and daughters of Abam, who pledged millions of naira towards the proposed facility.

The project is expected to provide a modern centre for communal activities and strengthen the bonds among Abam indigenes, particularly those residing in Aba.

Speaking at the event, the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Okoro Christopher, who was the Guest Speaker, commended the Abam people for conceiving what he described as a visionary development initiative.

He noted that the proposed hall would serve as a unifying centre for Abam indigenes in Aba and urged the community to sustain its commitment to development.

The Rector also called on the people to support Governor Alex Otti’s second-term ambition, arguing that continuity in governance was necessary to ensure the completion of ongoing projects in Abam.

Making reference to the popular 4+4 political slogan, he stressed that political continuity remained important in preventing the abandonment of development projects.

Responding, the Chairman of Abam Onyerubi, Hon. Ijoma Chimereucheya, declared the community’s support for Governor Otti’s re-election bid.

He said the people were determined to protect their collective interests and ensure that development projects in the area were not abandoned because of political differences.

Chimereucheya reaffirmed the community’s resolve to place development above partisan considerations, stressing the need for sustained cooperation with the state government.

The celebration attracted several prominent personalities, including the Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa, and other members of the legislature.

Also present were the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Hon. Okoro Uchenna Kalu; Prince Dan Kalu; the Rector of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic; serving and former senators; members of the House of Representatives; serving mayors; traditional rulers and other political and community leaders.

Among them was Hon. Uko Nkole, former member representing Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency and NDC senatorial candidate for Abia North.

A major highlight of the celebration was the colourful display of Abam’s cultural heritage, featuring performances by the Abam War Dance Group, Ekpe masquerade and other indigenous cultural troupes.

The performances showcased the community’s rich ancestral traditions and cultural identity, adding colour to the annual gathering.

Beyond the festivities, the 2026 Abam Day celebration provided an opportunity for community fundraising, political engagement and cultural preservation, with the proposed N1b hall project emerging as the major symbol of the people’s collective development aspirations.
