The Federal Government has commenced vocational training for 75 beneficiaries in beauty and cosmetology in Lagos State under its Innovation Development and Effectiveness in Acquisition of Skills (IDEAS) Project.

The beneficiaries are undergoing training at Elegant Twins Institute of Cosmetology, Surulere, one of the centres participating in the Federal Government’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) intervention.

The development was disclosed during a monitoring visit by the National Project Monitoring Officer for TVET and IDEAS in the Office of the Minister of Education, Mr Olatunji Odewunmi, to selected training centres in Lagos.

The exercise, which also covered the Federal Technical College, Yaba, assessed training delivery, institutional performance, compliance with programme requirements and progress made by beneficiaries.

Speaking during the visit, Odewunmi said the monitoring exercise was aimed at ensuring that participating centres fulfilled their obligations and that government investments in vocational education produced measurable outcomes.

He disclosed that Lagos State had approximately 128 TVET centres providing opportunities for Nigerians to acquire vocational skills.

According to him, the programme covers essential training requirements, including registration, accommodation and learning materials, while beneficiaries receive a monthly stipend of N30,000.

He added that training service providers receive N50,000 per trainee monthly to facilitate effective delivery.

Odewunmi said the intervention was designed to strengthen Nigeria’s skilled workforce, develop local technical capacity, reduce dependence on foreign artisans and equip young people with competencies to secure employment or establish businesses.

At Elegant Twins Institute, the Centre Manager, Kunle Oladunjoye, said the institute was selected as a training service provider following a transparent and merit-based process involving interviews and verification of applicants’ information.

He said qualified professional instructors, including former students with substantial industry experience, were delivering the training.

Oladunjoye added that the beneficiaries had demonstrated encouraging progress and were acquiring the practical skills and confidence required to establish their own businesses.

He commended the Federal Government for meeting its financial obligations to the training centre and providing monthly stipends for the beneficiaries.

Some of the trainees also expressed satisfaction with the programme.

One of the beneficiaries, Abdulhakeem Shamsudeen, said he had acquired additional skills in nail technology and makeup, building on his previous knowledge of the beauty industry.

He confirmed that the training was free and that he received the monthly N30,000 stipend.

Similarly, Omotosho Okwemi commended the government for providing free vocational training and financial support, while Boma Messe-Britz said she had acquired practical knowledge in makeup, hairdressing, nail technology and spa services.

At the Federal Technical College, Yaba, the IDEAS Project Manager, Abimbola Oyedeji, said the intervention, which commenced about five years ago, had contributed to increased student enrolment and improved practical skills training at the institution.

She identified the supported vocational areas as blocklaying and concreting, tiling, woodwork, auto body building, computer craft and catering craft.

The Federal Government said it would sustain monitoring and evaluation across its TVET interventions to ensure accountability, quality assurance and effective delivery of vocational training.

The IDEAS Project is a Federal Government initiative supported by the World Bank and implemented through the Federal Ministry of Education to strengthen Nigeria’s TVET system, improve institutional capacity and equip learners with practical skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
