Army Arrests Police Sergeant, 18 Others For Vandalism In Abia

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 143 Battalion have arrested 19 suspected vandals allegedly caught stealing underground pipelines along the Nkwonta axis of Isuikwuato Local Government Area of Abia State.
The arrest came days after the Executive Mayor of Isuikwuato LGA, Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, warned against the destruction and theft of public infrastructure in the area.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended while attempting to load the stolen pipeline materials onto a heavy-duty trailer.
Among those arrested was Sergeant Daniel Emeka, a police officer attached to the Ovim Division of the Nigeria Police Force. Others reportedly included a truck driver, a bus driver, a conductor, 12 loaders, and two panel beaters or metal cutters.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Reacting to the development, Mayor Ekeke commended the Commanding Officer of the 143 Battalion, Lt. Col. A. M. Rabe; the leader of the team that carried out the operation, Lt. F. A. Bashir; and other soldiers involved in the arrest.
He described the operation as a significant breakthrough in the fight against vandalism and the protection of public and private assets across the local government area.
Ekeke also praised the soldiers for reportedly rejecting substantial bribe offers allegedly made by the suspects in an attempt to secure their release.
According to the mayor, the soldiers’ refusal to compromise their duties demonstrated integrity, professionalism and commitment to the protection of public infrastructure.
The arrest followed the mayor’s recent warning over increasing cases of vandalism in Isuikwuato, including an attempted theft of materials at the council’s pig farm and reported incidents involving high-tension electricity cables along the Amiyi Obinaohia–Abia State University (ABSU) axis.
During his earlier appeal, Ekeke urged parents and guardians to monitor the activities of their children and wards, stressing that community involvement was essential to preventing criminal activities.
He said decisive action was necessary to protect public resources, safeguard infrastructure and deter individuals involved in the destruction or theft of valuable assets.
The mayor assured residents that the suspects would face the full weight of the law if found culpable.
Vandalism of public infrastructure can disrupt essential services, threaten livelihoods, compromise public safety and impose additional costs on government and communities.
With the suspects now in NSCDC custody, attention is expected to focus on the outcome of the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings.
